This is a midweek bonus episode of the Rock and Roll Geek Show. As you probably know by now, I was in London, England a couple of weeks ago for the Ginger birthday bash thanks to Alex from Bathroom Wall and Phil from the Paranoid Squirrel podcast and while I was there, I wandered around the streets of London by myself with a microphone strapped to me. This is what took place while the mic was on. It is what I call 'Walking With Butler Through The Streets of London"

Richie Ranno from Starz comes on the show and we take an in-depth look at their 1978 album Attention Shoppers! We go track by track and find out all of the behind the scenes dirt on each song. Richie holds nothing back. If you don't have this album in your record collection, you need to go get it today. Along with all of the Starz records. Each one is a classic.

 Review from Allmusic.com:

Arguably, pop-metal is a form of power pop, or, at the very least, the two have some things in common. Like the Raspberries, the Go-Go's, or Blondie, a pop-metal act will typically blend rockin', guitar-powered aggression with pop sensibilities. Cheap Trick and Sweet, in fact, are perfect examples of bands that are relevant to both pop-metal and power pop. So it seemed logical when Starz provided a big dose of outright power pop on its third album, Attention Shoppers!. The band didn't eliminate the pop-metal factor on this 1978 LP; "X-Ray Spex" and "Good Ale We Seek," for example, are the type of pop-minded hard rock items that one expected from Starz. But tunes like "I'll Be There," "She" (not to be confused with the Kiss favorite), and "Hold on to the Night" are power pop ditties that wouldn't have been out of place at a Raspberries session; this isn't to say that Attention Shoppers! is in a class with the Raspberries' best work. Starz's third album isn't a masterpiece, but it's competent and enjoyable. Further, Starz deserves credit for trying something different and not turning this LP into a carbon copy of Starz or Violation.

“It is with regret that Jetboy announces the departure of both Doug Hovan (percussion) and Michael Butler (bass) from the band’s lineup.
“Following the completion of the band’s most recent EP, ‘Off Your Rocker’, and its pending release, the band entered a phase of intense introspection regarding band members’ roles, chemistry, and dedication to providing Jetboy fans with the most professional product possible. Through this process, original members Mickey Finn, Billy Rowe and Fernie Rod, in conjunction with management, made difficult decisions regarding Jetboy’s direction and ability to perform at a consistently professional level. Difficult decisions were made that resulted in Doug Hovan’s voluntary departure and Michael Butler’s much-publicized on-air dismissal during the recent ‘Good Clean Fun’ podcast .
Jetboy wishes to assure fans that while the podcast may have presented the split in a light that was less that friendly, the parties have since worked out their differences and the split was best for all involved. In addition, Billy Rowe will continue to perform with THE BUTLERS and Michael Butler, further displaying that the parties continue to have a positive working and personal relationship.
Jetboy wishes nothing but the best and future success to both Doug and Michael, and want to assure fans that the core of Jetboy remains the same, and that the music that has been embraced by their fan base will not change.
Jetboy is currently in the midst of negotiations for distribution of the new EP and will announce further details about the release as soon as they become available.”
A rock documentary film on Jetboy is in the preliminary stages of being shot by Reality Check TV, which also produced the “mini-doc” included in Jetboy’s last CD/DVD release, “The Glam Years”, on Cleopatra/Deadline Records.
“The Glam Years” contained a DVD of a 1986 concert at Los Angeles’ legendary Whisky a Go-Go (featuring a chock-full of extra interviews and photos) as well as a 21-track CD of the group’s greatest hits.

On this show I mourn the news about Steven Tyler supposedly quitting Aerosmith, something I predicted would happen during the recent tour. And to mourn this, I play some of my favorite Aerosmith tunes.

According to The Las Vegas Sun:
Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry said today that singer Steven Tyler quit the band following a recent concert in Abu Dhabi.
Bassist Tom Hamilton told the Boston Herald’s Inside Track that there is dissension among the “Bad Boys From Boston,” but that he hopes things can be worked out. He dismissed a report that guitarist Brad Whitford discussed the possiblity of Aerosmith finding a new frontman.
However, Perry told the Las Vegas Sun today that he believes Tyler is history.
“Steven quit as far as I can tell,” Perry said from his Boston home. “I don’t know anymore than you do about it. I got off the plane two nights ago. I saw online that Steven said that he was going to leave the band. I don’t know for how long, indefinitely or whatever. Other than that, I don’t know.”
Part of the problem, he says, is that Tyler doesn’t return his phone calls.
“He’s notorious for that,” Perry said. “That’s one thing I’ve learned to live with. I try to overlook it. I like to pick my battles. Frankly, the last few months I’ve been wanting not to rock the boat. I don’t want him canceling any more gigs. We really wanted to do these last four. We just kind of didn’t want to call him out or anything and get him anymore pissed off, for whatever reason. So we just let things lie. So we did the gigs and, like I said, I got off the plane and saw this online. That’s how I know about it.”
Perry will perform his Joe Perry Project Nov. 28 at the Las Vegas House of Blues, performing from his latest release “Have Guitar, Will Travel.”
Most of Aerosmith’s recent world tour was canceled in August after Tyler fell from the stage at a Sturgis, S.D., concert and broke his shoulder. The band members were unhappy with Tyler over the incident. However, Aerosmith salvaged the final leg of the tour, including two shows in Hawaii and one Sunday at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix before more than 50,000 fans.
After the Middle Eastern concert the band parted ways with Perry going to London to attend the Classic Rock & Roll of Honour awards ceremony on Monday. Perry said he arrived home in Boston on Wednesday and read on the Internet that Tyler planned to leave the band.
“He has had no contact with me or the other band members,” Perry said.
He says he hopes to keep Aerosmith together, with or without Tyler, but he was so stunned by recent developments he doesn’t know what’s going to happen.
“Right now I’m adjusting to how we’re going to go on,” Perry says. “Aerosmith is such a powerful band, I mean it’s like a steam locomotive. You just can’t disregard 40 years of four guys who play together as well as they do. We’re just trying to – at least I am – trying to figure out what direction the band should take.
“As far as replacing Steve, it’s not just about that, it’s also four guys that play extremely well together, and I’m not going to see that go to waste. I really don’t know what path it’s going to take at this point, but we’ll probably find somebody else that will sing in those spots where we need a singer and then we’ll be able to move the Aerosmith up a notch, move the vibe up a notch.”
Perry believes Tyler has been planning on leaving for a while.
“Obviously he hasn’t been giving 100 percent to this thing for a long time,” Perry said. “He’s obviously had this planned for a long time. To disregard his brothers to the point where we have to find out about it on the Internet – it’s like, 'See you later, Bud.’ I still care for him as a person, or at least the person I used to know. But things change.”
Aerosmith rose to popularity in the ’70s with a combination of hard rock and power ballads only to be derailed by drug and alcohol abuse. After Tyler completed rehab in 1986, the band rose to prominence again. There were rumors last year that Tyler had checked back into rehab after more than 20 years of sobriety.
Perry himself left the band for two years in 1979. While he was away he created the solo Joe Perry Project, which has now released five albums.
“The circumstances were different then,” Perry said. “We’d been touring pretty much nonstop for eight years and the band was just pretty much burned out on each other. We needed a break. We needed to take a vacation but blood was running so hot I just had to leave, had to get out of there. But I certainly wasn’t going to stop playing so I put out a solo project.”

All Music Guide Review of No Place To Run:

The first studio recording after the departure of guitarist Michael Schenker, No Place to Run set into motion UFO's critical and commercial decline. While only a slight adjustment to the band's successful hard rock formula, the midtempo guitar rock bore much more of a resemblance to fading '70s rockers like Bad Company than the coming NWOBHM. Fellow Brits like Def Leppard were cultivating a similar but much more exciting brand of simple, angular hard rock built for the millions of AC/DC-loving Americans, while UFO seemed to be chasing their stylistic tail. Louder and way more energetic, Def Leppard were poised to overtake the rock universe while UFO languished on No Place to Run. Tracks like "This Fire Burns Tonight" call to mind Jackson Brown-styled adult rock; meanwhile, any audience UFO might have built up over the harder-edged Schenker years was fleeing to acts like the Scorpions and Judas Priest, who were only getting heavier. To call No Place to Run a middle-of-the-road miscalculation would be generous. The disc had already aged badly when it was released and that hasn't changed in the decades since.

About Nardwuar The Human Serviette:

Nardwuar the Human Serviette (born John Ruskin, July 5, 1968) is a Canadian celebrity interviewer and musician from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.[1] He is the lead singer and keyboardist for The Evaporators and plays in Thee Goblins. He is an indie-rock expert. [2]

He legally changed his name in 1986, and argues that "no one refers to Iggy Pop as 'James Osterberg'". When asked to explain his name, Nardwuar once quipped "Nardwuar equals dumb silly name, like Sting; Human means human, as in Human Fly; and Serviette is something you can't get in the U.S. because down there they're called napkins."

Nardwuar's interviews are frequently shown on MuchMusic's Going Coastal, or printed in Chart. Nardwuar's favourite targets appear to be musical celebrities, but he'll interview almost anyone famous.[4]

His interview style can be quite grating and confusing to those who have had no prior experience with him. A typical interview will begin with "Who are you?", followed by "From?" if the subject doesn't volunteer his affiliations. The interview will always end with "Keep on rockin' in the free world", and the "doot doola doot doo..." of "Shave and a Haircut", to which the interviewee must respond with the final "doot doo!" before Nardwuar will let them go. A somewhat common reply by edgy rock stars such as Courtney Love has been "Fuck you!"[5]

Due to his upfront and esoteric style he has been attacked verbally, physically threatened, and intimidated by people such as Sebastian Bach of Skid Row (who stole Nardwuar's tuque); the band Quiet Riot (who chased Nardwuar and crew down the street); and Dave Rowntree of Blur. Alice Cooper, Harlan Ellison, Beck and others have hung up on him.[6]Snoop Dogg has repeatedly stolen various items from Nardwuar, including a Redd Foxx doll and Richard Pryor and Blowfly records[7] , although Snoop claims to be 'taking' the objects in question rather than stealing them. Chris Fehn of Slipknot wouldn't talk during an interview and left during the interview after having enough of Nardwuar.

Nardwuar's unorthodox approach often ends up in bizarre scenarios. He once received Lemmy's answering machine message when Lemmy was not made aware of the interview time by his publicist. Guerrilla journalism or not, Nardwuar's style is very much based on taking the piss out of his subject. Some of his subjects recognise it and successfully manage to reverse the scenario on him, especially Iggy Pop, David Cross and "Weird Al" Yankovic. Some misinterpret his hijinks as intentionally disrespectful, particularly Henry Rollins and pornographer Al Goldstein.

More often the experience confuses the celebrities. Members of GWAR tried not to laugh while in character. Jello Biafra was impressed with his guerrilla interview style, but became noticeably angered in a 2000 interview when Nardwuar began to cajole Biafra about Biafra's lawsuit against former Dead Kennedys band mates [8]. Others who have appreciated Nardwuar's interview include Nirvana, Kelly Rowland, Marilyn Manson, Franz Ferdinand, Ron Jeremy, N.E.R.D. and Michael Moore.

Nardwuar does extensive research on the interviewee to confuse, scare or impress them; often bringing up minutia about band members' pasts that they have a hard time recalling, until he coaches them along. Frequently, he will also attempt to make connections, no matter how obscure, between the person or subject at question and Canada. A tribute to his research skills, while interviewing Josh Homme, he produced a grade school class photo of Homme mid-interview, who remained blasé yet clearly impressed.

I’m getting a headache listening to this “ratt” review…Let me just say—-They suck now and they sucked then or vise versa. On another note, being a huge Divynle fan, you may like the attached MP3 from a group called the Duke Spirit, a hot stripper at the Clairmont Lounge Dances to this song and turned me on to them. • ? Butler! Totally forgot to do some major ass kissing last time. Time to catch up! Loved Standing in the Spotlight. Great album. 10 of 10 as far as rap goes. Also liked the Cheap Trick review, definitely a must have. You know, you should not you send me Standing in the Spotlight, the Latest, and Michael Monroe’s Not Fakin’ It, because that would just be wrong, and I did not just get fired and am not out of money. Thanks for your awesome podcast. I recently checked out one called Rock and Roll TV, and what flashed across my screen, but horrendous pop and rap garbage I had never heard of. Thusly, I thank you for all you do in the world of rock and roll.

p.s.- Attention all geeks under the age of 18! take it from a fellow young rock and roll geek… Find better things to bleed your bank account dry with than avenged sevenfold. PLEASE!!!

• ? Hello once again, I loved the track by track review of The Latest. If you hadn’t done the track by track i might not have bought the record. But thanks to your podcast it now sits with my other CD’s. I have written this email to inform you about the new Dream Theater record that I just found on iTunes. I love this record and reccommend it to all fans of rock. Here is my favorite song from the album and I hope you enjoy it. It is a little long but hey, that’s what Dream Theater is known for!

I also love the name ” DEPARTMENT OF YOUTH!! ”

• ? Hello My Friend, How’s it going? Pretty great here since I went to the PRIEST-Whitesnake show last night in Wallingford CT…and recorded it BADLY, just as reference anyway. I will try to do an audio comment/review this week. Halford sounded great.. David Coverdale didn’t do to bad a job either. I wasn’t to excited about WS but they were surprisingly entertaining. Priest is always great and hearing British Steel cover to cover was very enjoyable. That’s what they started the show with. that’s a great album..Priest did not do Turning Circles like I had hoped but That was to be expected, They did Freewheel Burnin at the end with Rob Halford coming out on his Bike. I prefer Hell bent for leather but that’s OK, Something off of Defenders o the faith brings me back too. Gotta run, I have a 2 year old who is screaming and a 6 year old who is sleeping.

Peace for now brother-

• ? Michael:
A couple of years ago…my 2 kids (who are young) asked me about some music their friends were playing.
I listened to it and quite frankly it was terrible….they liked it as it was from the latest “movie” the kids were into.

Since then…Every summer I have a tradition with my 2 daughters of schooling them in music.
I have always believed if you know the history you can then judge what is happening now appropriately….in anything…music, politics etc
Each summer I pick 2 bands….load a ipod and play it all summer up at our cottage.
Any suggestions on music?
I am covering all styles of music…..
I have already done Beatles, Beach Boys/Surf Music, Bob Marley, and Elvis/Rockabilly,
Any thoughts?…I have brain cramp today…

• ? Michael,

This is coming to you a little late on this topic, my apologies. You are probably sick of banter about the Dee Dee album review. I just quickly wanted to comment. No matter what anyone says, that album is 100% Dee Dee. It captures his character, humor, and his edge perfectly. It also has some catchy tunes. For that, I appreciate the album. Kudos to you for reviewing it, I am sure you knew the controversy that was coming.
Last night on VH1 classic they aired a Thin Lizzy concert, I am not sure the date. The show was titled BBC crown Jewel (or something similar). If you have not seen it, check it out. I thought it was great.

Happy Friday bro,
Parker, The Rock and Roll P – Dog

Rock and Roll Geek Show 346 - Rock City Angels Interview

February 28, 2009 · Print This Article

A super in-depth interview with Bobby Durango, singer for Rock City Angels. It is a long interview and a tale that I think needs to be told. Hear the story of a band that was signed to Geffen Records at around the same time Guns N’ Roses were signed to the same label and the completely different ways both bands were treated by that label. We talk about everything from the infamous conspiracy theory behind their debut release ‘Young Man’s Blues’, Johnny Depp’s time in the band to the long overdue new record “Use Once and Destroy. Bobby was extremely honest in this interview and nothing was held back. If you are in an up and coming rock band and want to hear what really happens when a band gets signed, you should listen to this interview.
